Los Angeles—Well, it’s official. With the announcement yesterday by Sony Pictures that Ang Lee has signed on to direct the film version of TV mega-hit sitcom “Seinfeld,” Hollywood has finally confirmed that it’s run out of original ideas.
Oscar winner Lee, known for movies like “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “The Ice Storm” and “Hulk,” will bring a certain gravitas to the production, the release by Sony said.
No confirmation on the cast has been made yet, but rumors are swirling around Tinseltown that Robert Pattinson is on the short list to play the title character. It is believed that the film will focus on the beginning of the friendship of the famout quartet, showing the end of the romance between Jerry and Elaine. No one is quite sure if Lee will make it a film “about nothing.”
“I can totally see a plot involving Newman and the Soup Nazi stealing Jerry’s sword, ‘The Green Destiny,’ and the hi-jinx that ensues as they try to get it back,” said former “Seinfeld” writer Spike Feresten, who is not associated with the movie. “That would rule.”
“Seinfeld” creators Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David have not commented on the announcement, and it’s unclear if they will be involved with the final product. David is still working on his hit HBO program, “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and Seinfeld is reaping the benefits of this latest NBC gem, “The Marriage Ref.”
Representatives for Lee said the director is “thrilled to be attached to this wonderful project and entrusted with these characters. He’s looking forward to exploring the origin story and yada yada yada.”
Other names being tossed about Hollywood to play the famous characters include Jonah Hill as George Costanza; Anne Hathaway, who worked with Lee in his Oscar-winning film, “Brokeback Mountain,” as Elaine; and Denzel Washington as Kramer. Sony would not comment on any casting news.
